A man wanted on warrants allegedly fled police and then hit his head after attempting to leap from a tree to escape officers last week.

Police spotted the wanted suspect, identified as Japolo Kentris Laye, 25, on Royal Court and chased him Thursday afternoon. Laye, who was wearing only socks and pants, fled and officers tracked him to White Line Alley and then Hamilton Road, according to a report, where he ran through a vacant lot and then climbed the tree.

An officer demanded Laye get out of the tree, which was next to a 6-foot fenced enclosure, according to the police report, but he jumped over the fence, hit a small building and fell to the ground.

Police took Laye into custody and searched him, finding suspected marijuana and suspected cocaine. Paramedics evaluated Laye after he said he hit his head on the building. He was medically cleared and officers took him to jail.

He faces charges of cocaine possession with intent to sell, marijuana possession, obstruction and prior warrant charges.

Man faces drug charge after claiming hard times

A man who allegedly said he was selling drugs to avoid eviction faces a drug charge after an investigator said he witnessed a drug transaction.

Marcus Deon Dunlap, 30, whose address was unavailable, was charged with cocaine possession with intent to distribute after an investigator said he saw a man hand off the drug to another person Thursday at Daniel Food Mart, 512 Daniel St., and the incident was recorded on video.

An officer went to the area where the investigator reported the incident and saw Dunlap, who fit the description of the dealer, and arrested him. He searched Dunlap and found a bag of suspected cocaine.

The arresting officer wrote in his report that Dunlap admitted the substance was cocaine and that he had just started selling after losing his job and he was facing eviction. Dunlap was taken to Troup County Jail and the suspected cocaine was sent to the GBI for testing.

Man claims no knowledge of drugs in car

A man faces drug charges after police said he was sitting in a car outside a motel shortly after midnight Sunday with a marijuana joint in the front seat, and more suspected drugs inside the car.

Police arrested Jadarius Devonte Childs, 22, whose address was unavailable, after an officer saw him sitting inside the car in a parking spot outside Stay Lodge, 1610 Whitesville St., with the headlights on and car running. The officer approached the car, and when Childs rolled the window down, the officer said he could smell marijuana and spotted the suspected joint and a half-consumed bottle of liquor in the front seat.

The officer searched the car and found a pill bottle with suspected marijuana and a headphone case with more suspected marijuana and 10 1/2 Alprazolam, or Xanax, pills. Childs said he knew nothing about any of the drugs and was only waiting on a man and woman who had been in the car and now were inside the motel.

Childs was arrested and taken to Troup County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor marijuana possession.
