NEWNAN — Investigators with the Newnan Police Department released details in the arrest of a former Troup County Sheriff’s deputy.

James Langley, 39, was charged Tuesday with one count of battery by the Newnan Police Department. He was arrested, booked into the Coweta County Jail and later released after bonding out.

Newnan police said they were contacted by a man who said after he picked up his 4-year-old daughter from his estranged wife’s house, the little girl stated Langley spanked her, “because she was bad.”

The man told officers Langley is the wife’s boyfriend. The man and his wife are going through a divorce, according to the police report.

According to the man, the 4 year old had a large bruise on her backside. He took a picture to document the injury.

Officers said the girl’s backside had “dark blue and black bruising.”

The case was turned over to Newnan police’s Crime Investigation Division.

Deputy Chief Rodney Riggs said they are still investigating the allegations against Langley.

He stated the mother is not a person of interest in the case.

Riggs said prosecutors may pursue additional charges against Langley.

The Troup County Sheriff’s Office announced Sheriff James Woodruff accepted Langley’s resignation from the law enforcement agency on Wednesday.

TCSO officials said Woodruff was contacted by a NPD detective two weeks ago about the criminal investigation of Langley.

Woodruff immediately placed Langley on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
