A traffic stop on Interstate 85 landed two people in jail and helped the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office confiscate a loaded handgun and more than a pound of marijuana.

According to Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith, the department’s K9 unit conducted a traffic stop on a silver Chevrolet Impala in the southbound lanes of I-85 just north of Hogansville about midnight on March 8.

The deputy said he smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle when he approached the driver.

Smith said the deputy’s K9, Rambo, then indicated that he detected narcotics inside the vehicle.

According to Smith, a search of the car revealed more than a pound of suspected marijuana, a loaded .40-caliber handgun and cash.

The driver of the vehicle, Calvin Jenkins, 24, of Auburn, Alabama, was charged with felony possession of more than 28 grams of marijuana and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The passenger, Anntwinnett Dixon, 33, of Columbus, was charged with felony possession of more than 28 grams of marijuana.

Both Jenkins and Dixon were transported to the Meriwether County Jail.

Jenkins’ bond was set at $10,000 and Dixon’s was set at $5,000.
