Tree falls through home while people sleeping inside

LaGRANGE — Two residents received a rude awakening about 1 a.m. Thursday when a large tree fell through the roof of their house in the 600 block of Park Avenue, demolishing a bedroom and damaging part of the garage.
LaGrange police said a car parked in a driveway also was damaged.
The man and woman were not hurt in the incident.
The woman told officers she woke up after hearing a loud noise and feeling the house shake, police said.
She told officers when she went to find the source of the sound she saw the tree lying on the house.
On Friday, Terry McCann and his crew with M & T Tree Service of LaGrange said they removed the tree from the residence.
According to McCann, the tree trunk was rotted.
He and the crew also used heavy machinery to tear down the remaining walls of the bedroom that were still standing and piled up debris destroyed by the tree.
McCann said the man who lives in the house told him he slept in that bedroom the night before the tree fell on it.
The LaGrange Fire Department shut off all the circuit breakers to the home, plus the water and gas meters, police said.
City officials will have to inspect the home and make sure it is up to code before residents can move back into the residence.
