ROCKMART – What a finish.

The Callaway Lady Cavaliers returned to Rockmart on Wednesday to complete a soccer match that was postponed by rain earlier in the season.

When the game was halted, the score was tied 4-4, and there were less than 20 minutes remaining.

More than a month later, those two teams got together again, and they gave the fans a thrilling finish.

After Rockmart scored a goal to take the lead, Callaway tied it late in regulation.

The game went into overtime, and Callaway took over, scoring a pair of goals to claim a 7-5 victory.

It was an important win for the Lady Cavaliers, who improved to 6-3 in Region 5-AAA.

Callaway, which beat Cedartown on Monday, will finish the week with a region road game against Central-Carroll on Friday.

In Wednesday’s game, Rockmart appeared to be in control after notching the go-ahead goal, but Callaway pulled even when Kelly Carlisle scored off of a corner kick late in regulation.

The teams played two five-minute overtime periods, and Callaway dominated, with Savannah Thompson and Chloe McGuffin each scoring goals.

Unfortunately for the Callaway boys’ team, it wasn’t a winning night.

It was scoreless when Callaway was called for a penalty in the box with less than two minutes left in the game, and Rockmart was awarded a penalty kick.

The successful kick gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead, and that was the final score.

It was a costly loss for the Cavaliers, who fell to 3-5 in the region, and they’ll head to Central-Carroll on Friday in desperate need of a win.

Also on Wednesday, LaGrange High’s soccer teams were on the road for non-region games against Whitewater, and it was a tough night.

Whitewater won both the girls’ and boys’ games 9-0.

LaGrange’s teams will be at home on Friday for a Region 1-AAAAA doubleheader against Carver, with the girls’ game starting at 5:30 p.m., and the boys’ game to follow at 7:30 p.m.

The games will be played at Gardner Newman Middle School.
