The LaGrange Fire Department said Wednesday a house fire on Willowcrest Way caused about $240,000 in damage to the home, but injured no one.

Firefighters spent about three and a half hours battling the blaze in the 200 block of Willowcrest Way early Monday morning, according to a press release.

“LaGrange firefighters arrived on the scene at 4:49 a.m. and found heavy fire conditions showing from the rear of a two-story, wood-frame and brick family dwelling,” the press release states. “LaGrange firefighters pulled several fire attack hose lines and began an aggressive attack on the fire. A search and rescue team entered the resident to check for possible persons trapped inside. There was no one found inside of the resident. There were over 15 firefighters on the scene battling the blaze.”

The fire caused extensive damage to the rear of the home and the attic. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Loitering leads to arrest

A 21-year-old man was arrested for loitering early Wednesday morning at Lee’s Crossing Apartments.

The man was arrested after he allegedly approached two women in a car in the parking lot of the apartment complex at 119 Old Airport Road. The women told police the man appeared disheveled and under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to a police report.

The women drove to the apartment manager’s office and called 911, but the man followed them. Again, the women drove away from the man, going to Dollar General on Vernon Road, where they met police. Police received another call from the apartments about the man, and an officer escorted the women to their residence before searching for him.

The officer later found the man, who said he was homeless and had no name, according to the police report. He was later identified and charged with loitering and obstruction.

Women arrested on pot charge

Two women were arrested Monday on marijuana possession charges on Hamilton Street.

Police stopped a Ford Taurus shortly before 11 p.m. near the intersection of Hamilton and Fendig streets and allegedly smelled marijuana in their vehicle, according to a police report. The officer asked the occupants about the marijuana, and the passenger said there was none inside “because she smoked it all,” the report states.

After searching the car, police allegedly found a half-smoked marijuana cigarette in the center console.

Both women, ages 18 and 20, were arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Stolen car recovered by police, deputies

A stolen vehicle was recovered by LaGrange police and Troup County sheriff’s deputies Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and Cooley Road.

The car, a 2010 Hyundai Sonata, was reported stolen earlier in the day from a residence on Sirrine Street. The victim told police the car was taken on Tuesday.

When found, the car’s window had been broken, the ignition destroyed and the sides of the car were “badly keyed,” according to a police report.

The vehicle was towed to a service shop and returned to the owner. The theft is under investigation.
