Football camp ready for kickoff

LAGRANGE – A handful of former LaGrange High football stars will share the field once again.

The TH2 Elite Football Camp, which was originally scheduled for last weekend, will instead be held on Saturday at the Whitesville Road stadium.

The camp gets under way at 9 a.m. and goes through 2 p.m., and it is for players ages 10 to 18.

The players will be led through a number of combine drills, and there will also be a seven-on-seven competition, and Big Peach Prep Recruiting will be on hand to give players feedback on their performance in the drills.

Among the instructors will be former Grangers Travis Hart, DeMoreo Ford, Thad Todd, Tray Blackmon, Braxton Kelley, Brandon Kelley, each of whom were part of multiple state-championship teams.

LaGrange High graduate Qua Huzzie will serve as the camp director.

Also helping out will be Troup High graduate Chris Burnette, who was a three-year starter on the offensive line at the University of Georgia.

Quantavius Leslie, a Callaway High graduate who was a wide receiver at LSU, will also serve as a camp instructor.

Hart said the idea is to bring something different to Troup County.

“Basically, we didn’t want to do a typical camp,” Hart said. “A lot of guys come to a football camp, and they never remember what they did at the camp. With this camp, we’re going to do basically a pro-day style camp. We’re going to do all of the combine drills. And we’re going to do individual, specific drills. Basically it’s going to be a mirror of the combine. The second day, we’re going to come back and do basically a seven-on-seven free-for-all. We’ll let some teams come in and get some practice time. We’ll get to go against different people.”

Huzzie, a linebacker who left LaGrange as the program’s all-time leading tackler, said the camp is a great way for he and some other former prep players in Troup County to lend a hand.

Huzzie was a successful college player at Kentucky and Murray State, and he led a professional team to a championship during his one year playing in Finland.

“I’m looking forward to it, to giving back to the community, to using my knowledge of football and knowledge of life to give back to the younger guys,” Huzzie said.

Hart said the camp is not just about football, but is also about trying to help out the community.

“We need to do it sooner than later, because we’ve got too many of our kids going the wrong way,” Hart said.
