HOGANSVILLE – At Callaway High, there is a room set aside for athletic scholarship signings.

Callaway softball players have put that room to good use.

When Keshonna Terrell held her signing ceremony on Monday afternoon, she became the fourth member of the 2015 softball team to get an opportunity to play on the collegiate level.

“You’ve got four seniors, and all of them are going to play ball,” Callaway head coach Ashley Summerlin said. “To have that many in one year be able to go, that’s special.”

That number is especially impressive considering there were only five seniors on the 2015 team.

The one senior who isn’t continuing her softball career, Terriyunna Dunson, is going to be attending college this fall.

The first Callaway player who announced her college decision was Brittany Mitchell.

Mitchell played softball, soccer and basketball during her time at Callaway, and she is headed to Columbus State to play softball after signing an athletic scholarship late last year.

Mitchell was a four-year starter in softball, and her senior season was one of her best.

She hit .355 with three home runs, nine doubles and 18 RBIs, and she got red-hot down the stretch and helped carry the team to the state tournament.

Mitchell produced offensively, and she also got it done defensively while playing catcher for the first time.

Next up was Jessica Perkins, who will be staying close to home.

Perkins, who played at Callaway for three seasons after transferring to the school for her sophomore season, is going to LaGrange College.

Among the every-day players last season, Perkins led the way with a .456 batting average, and she was also tops on the team in hits (31) and doubles (nine), and she was among the team leaders with 13 RBIs.

Perkins also pitched in 18 games, and she started a team-best 15 games, and she led the team with four wins.

Perkins will be joining a LaGrange College program led by coach Jennifer Claybrook.

“I used to go to her camps when I was little, but I didn’t really know her,” Perkins said. “I got to know her on my college visit, and she’s really nice. I liked her personality.”

Also staying near home is Molly Hubbard, who signed with Point University.

“I didn’t want to go far,” Hubbard said. “It’s a good school. I visited there, and it’s pretty, and they’re really nice. And if anything happens, I’ll be close to home.”

Then on Monday, it was Terrell’s turn, and she announced that she’ll be playing at Clark Atlanta University.

Summerlin believes a handful of other Callaway softball players will be college-bound in the coming years.

“Our freshman class last year is kind of going to be like this senior class. That’s a really good group,” Summerlin said. “And there’s the (junior) group with Skylar (Rice), and Kelly (Carlisle). There’s some good ballplayers.”
