Musician to bring ‘power and soul’

LaGRANGE — Troi Atkinson, a singer-songwriter and troubadour, will perform on Saturday, July 23, at Pure Life Studios.

Atkinson, who lives in Auburn, Alabama, has kept a low profile but has played and opened for some famous musicians throughout his career, including Nirvana, Jordan Zevon and Zac Brown. In May, he was one of the only featured solo artists at the B.B. King Blues Club in Montgomery, Alabama, which is a rarity.

In 2012, Atkinson was diagnosed with mesothelioma. He stopped playing through treatment and when he picked his guitar back up and started writing again, he vowed to use his music to raise awareness for mesothelioma and the leading cause, asbestos.

His new song, “Not Ready Yet” (available at youtube.com/watch?v=emKuoZyEcUc) won Atkinson the Warren Zevon Keep Me in your Heart Award from the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization during its 2015 conference in Washington, D.C. Since then, he and his family have been able to find comfort and support through other patients in the ADAO community.

Atkinson’s Ozark hills and swamp influences make him a rock ‘n’ roll and blues infused artist with power and soul. His stories reflect his early nomadic lifestyle, and his songs are born from his experiences as a global traveler.

They allow listeners to see the world through his eyes as a solider and sailor.

“We love finding gems like Troi,” said Maggie McDonald, owner/operator of Pure Life Studios. “Writers like Troi keep the songs raw and the sentiment real which makes for an intimate concert that feels very one on one, as if each song was written about you.”

The concert will be held at Pure Life Studios, an acoustic listening room at 206 Clark St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Entry is a $10 cash donation at the door.

There will be a donation bucket on site and all donations benefit the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization. Outside food and drink are welcome.
