LaGRANGE — Last week, Callaway High incoming freshman recently had the opportunity to start school early by attending the schools inaugural High School 101 information course.

Parents dropped their students off early in the morning for the two hour session that consisted of the future Cavaliers touring the school, visiting the media center, meeting staff and asking questions.

During a session with guidance counselor Debra Jackson, the group eagerly agreed they were on their way to college after high school but they voiced uncertainty about how to get there.

She assured them, “It’s okay if you don’t know what you want to major in. It’s okay if you change your mind about what you want to do. It’s okay if you don’t know what college you want to attend right now, but I am glad to know you are all going.”

“There are so many options out there, from technical colleges to traditional colleges and universities, that it’s okay to take these next few years and explore what is best for you and to find the financial aid or funds that can help you get there,” she added. “In Georgia, we have the HOPE scholarship. We will be talking more about that so you can be more prepared for college when the time comes.”

High School 101 is designed to help incoming freshman to CHS acclimate to high school so they will feel comfortable asking questions, changing classes and have a group of peers they recognize. The hope is that if students feel welcomed early on, they will be more engaged and ready to perform at their highest level of achievement when school begins.
