Charlie Martin made a strong run at the championship on the way to a seventh-place finish in a professional golf tournament that wrapped up on Saturday.

Martin, a former standout golfer at LaGrange High and Georgia Southern, was in a tie for second place following Friday’s third round of the NeSmith Chevrolet Classic at Sapelo Hammock Golf Club.

The tournament is part of the Swing Thought Tour.

Martin moved into contention after posting scores of 67, 68 and 67 in the first three rounds, and he was just one shot behind tournament leader Anthony Maccaglia heading into Saturday’s fourth and final round.

Martin closed with a 2-over par 73, and he finished in a tie for seventh place with Peter Creighton.

Jonathan Hodge, who was tied for second place with Martin through three rounds, posted a closing 68 to win by one stroke over Joey Petronio.

It was Martin’s best finish on the tour, which features golfers trying to climb the professional ladder.
