LaGRANGE — Polling stations for the runoff elections for school board and the Republican nominee for Georgia’s 3rd Congressional District will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

For the Troup County Board of Education, voters in the board’s District 5 area may choose between educator Cathy Hunt and former THINC academy board chairman John Asbell. On the GOP front, state Sen. Mike Crane is facing former West Point Mayor Drew Ferguson to replace outgoing Congressman Lynn Westmoreland, who is not seeking re-election.

The winner of the Republican congressional race will face Democrat Angela Pendley in the Nov. 8 general election. In the Republican-leaning 3rd Congressional District, it’s likely that the GOP nominee will be the eventual winner of the contest. The Board of Education race will decide the final winner; school board seats are nonpartisan.

Early voting ended Friday, with 1,204 early ballots being cast in Troup County, according to Andy Harper, elections supervisor. By comparison, about 2,200 early votes were cast in the Democratic and Republican presidential primary races, he said.

Voter participation in the GOP runoff election has been relatively strong this cycle, Harper said.

“It’s been a pretty good turn out, considering it’s a runoff,” he said. “Not everyone could vote in the runoff. If they voted in the Democrat party, or they didn’t have a school board election, they couldn’t vote.”

Voters who are unsure of their polling place may check the Georgia Secretary of State’s secure My Voter Page at www.mvp.sos.ga.gov. The website allows users to print out their voter registration card, view sample ballots and learn their polling location. Users will need to enter their first initial, last name, county of registration and birthday to log in.
