LAGRANGE – Football is back.

For the past two days, the Callaway Cavaliers, LaGrange Grangers and Troup Tigers have been on the field as preseason practice gets under way.

Monday was the first day teams across the state could hold official preseason practices according to the Georgia High School Association calendar.

After a week’s worth of conditioning, teams can begin holding full-contact practices on Monday.

This week, the Callaway and LaGrange teams are practicing in the evening, while the Troup varsity team is on the field in the morning.

The Callaway Cavaliers completed their second preseason practice on Tuesday evening after a productive two-hour session.

Callaway will be practicing from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. this week.

“I’ve been proud of our kids’ effort, and our enthusiasm, yesterday and today,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said following Tuesday’s practice. “I felt like we had a better practice today than yesterday. We just had a lot of energy today, and we felt like we played a little faster, knew what to do a little better.”

Like Callaway, LaGrange is practicing in the evening this week.

The Grangers get on the field at 5:30 p.m., and they wrap things up at 7:30 p.m.

“(Monday) was more of a transition day,” LaGrange head coach Dialleo Burks said. “We really turned it up on them, on both sides. We’ve got some new coaches coming in, and they’re just getting used to how we do things.”

The Troup varsity team has been getting on the field at 8:30 a.m. each day this week, while the junior-varsity and freshmam teans are practicing in the evening.

While the regular-season begins on Aug. 19 for the local teams, there will be preseason games the next two weeks.

On Aug. 5, LaGrange will host Heard County, and it will visit Newnan on Aug. 11.

On Aug. 12, Callaway will be in Hogansville to play Northside-Columbus, and Troup will visit Harris County.

The regular season kicks off with Callaway hosting LaGrange, and Troup visiting Hardaway.
