LaGRANGE — On Saturday, the LaGrange Art Museum hosted its monthly Super Saturday at the museum. Children were able to make their own trophies out of cardboard, Popsicle sticks and other craft supplies at the free Olympic-themed event.

“We’re trying to encourage STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art and math,” said Sallie Keith, who led the class. “This is the engineering part of that, also, design.”

The goal of STEAM programs is to encourage critical thinking and creative problem solving. The children were focused but joyful as they designed creative trophies.

“It’s got a star on it and a musical instrument,” said Juniper Patrick, pointing out her favorite features of her trophy.

Many of the children at the event had watched the Olympics with their parents and were still excited about the races and events that they had viewed on television. Several proudly proclaimed what their favorite events were.

“Swimming of course, since I like to swim,” said Katie Jackson, whose favorite athlete to watch this year has been Katie Ledecky, who won four gold medals.

Some of the kids at the event expressed hopes to one day compete in the Olympics themselves.

“He does love to run,” said Karen Johnson of her son Michael Johnson Jr., who shares a name with a four-time Olympic gold medalist in sprinting.

The LaGrange Art Museum hosts the Super Saturday event on the third Saturday of every month. The next Super Saturday will be Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
