Man arrested on pot charges after traffic stop

A 19-year-old LaGrange man was arrested on charges of driving with an open container, marijuana possession and possession of a handgun by a minor on Saturday near the intersection of Ridley Avenue and Mitchell Street.

Police initially stopped the man’s vehicle because he ran a stop sign, according to a police report. When the officer approached the car, he reported smelling marijuana smoke coming from the vehicle. The man later told police he’d had a marijuana cigarette, but had eaten it before the officer approached the car.

Officers asked the man to exit the vehicle. The driver consented to a search of the car, and officers found a half-drank liquor bottle, a handgun and additional suspected marijuana.

The man was arrested and taken to the Troup County Jail. A passenger in the car was not charged, and police gave the passenger a ride to shelter, as a storm was moving in.

It is unclear if the minor has an attorney.

Man found dead in apartment

Emergency responders were unable to save a man who collapsed in his apartment on Mitchell Avenue Saturday and died.

The 84-year-old man was apparently carrying a load of laundry when he may have tripped and fallen. Rescuers found the man unconscious and performed CPR. The man may have been battling cancer at the time of his death, according to a police report.

A LaGrange Police detective is investigating the case, which is standard, and no foul play is suspected.

Police called to melee

Police were called to the Mike Daniel Recreation Center on Lafayette Parkway on Saturday after a woman was hit in the face by her niece.

The niece was apparently fighting another person in the parking lot of the rec center when the woman tried to intervene and break up the fight. The niece struck the woman in the mouth.

It is unclear what caused the fight, but when police arrived, the niece had left the property in a white sedan. No charges where filed because witnesses did not want to speak with police and no one wanted to press charges.
