HOGANSVILLE – Callaway High’s volleyball team hung tough with Newnan and Carrollton on Tuesday at home, but it dropped both matches.

Callaway has played a challenging early-season schedule, and coach Heather Smith believes facing top-notch competition will be beneficial for the players.

“It is good for the girls,” Smith said. “And I had a lot of younger players that stepped up a lot. It’s good to see when they’re called up, that they can step up and play well.”

In the Carrollton match, Smith put her second unit on the floor for the second set, and Callaway nearly came away with the win.

One of those players was Kelsey Wessinger, who Smith said “stepped up and played really well.”

Smith said Cheney Eubanks did a nice job of setting in both matches.

Callaway will be back home on Thursday for a pair of home matches, including one against LaGrange at 4:30 p.m.

LAFAYETTE CHRISTIAN: The Lafayette Christian volleyball team dropped a close on to The Campus on Tuesday in Peachtree City.

Lafayette Christian won the first set 25-20, but it rallied to win the second set 25-21.

The Campus finished off the match by winning the final two sets by identical 25-20 scores.

“I felt we could have competed better,” Lafayette Christian head coach Rene Gomez said. “Today, our inexperience really showed, one physically, and two mentally.”

Gomez said the Cougars had the lead in the first and fourth sets, “and just let it evaporate.”

Gomez said Emily Stringham did a nice job serving throughout the match.
