Attic Sale set for weekend

LaGRANGE — The Junior Service League will have a new location for its 42nd Attic Sale fundraiser this weekend.

The new site is the Callaway Conference Center at West Georgia Technical College at 220 Fort Drive. Sales in recent years were at the former Westbrook Service and Tire Co. building on Main Street.

“We were very thankful to the Downtown Development Authority for letting us use the Westbrook building for previous sales,” Attic Sale chairman Lucy Wynne said.

But a construction project at the Westbrook site meant the sale needed a new location.

”West Georgia Technical College and the Callaway Conference Center have bent over backward to accommodate the sale,” Wynne said.

Because the center is designed to host large events, lighting is improved and customers will be able to see items better, she said.

“We hope this will mean bigger sales,” Wynne said.

The new site also has access to an atrium where furniture will be displayed, and there will be adequate parking for customers, she said.

In a sense, setup for the sale will be like Christmas for JSL members, Wynne said.

“In recent years, we’ve had all year to store and sort donations at the Westbrook building,” she said.

But with the Westbrook site unavailable, items have been stored at five sites and were taken to the Callaway center on Sunday to be unloaded, sorted and priced by JSL members.

“We won’t really know what we have until we unpack it,” Wynne said last week.

For the nostalgia-minded, old T-shirts promoting the Attic Sale’s days at the Westbrook building will be available, along with the JSL’s “Grits and Grace” cookbook.

Despite the new location, many favorite features will return this year. The popular boutique section will offer new items donated by local businesses. Also back are areas devoted to furniture, household items, kitchenware, electronics, children’s toys and shoes, sporting goods, lawn and garden items, lighting, picture frames and more.

A bag sale will begin late Saturday morning at which customers may purchase a bag at a price to be determined, then fill it with as much merchandise as it will hold.

Some items are donated by JSL members, but many come from residents who have done spring cleaning or held yard sales, Wynne said.

The Attic Sale, which brings in $25,000 to $35,000 a year, is the largest annual project of the Junior Service League, an organization of women that raises money to support community projects.

The JSL funds one large project a year, Wynne said. Recent recipients have been the Boys & Girls Club of West Georgia and a wing at the Enoch Callaway Cancer Clinic at WellStar West Georgia Medical Center.

Funds in smaller amounts go to local groups and organizations that apply for mini-grants each year.

JSL has about 50 members, along with sustainers, former members who remain involved in aiding the organization.

Wynne, who has been a JSL member for four years, said the organization gives her “an opportunity to work with other women to focus on the well-being of the community.”

Because donations come from residents, JSL sells the items, then puts the money back into the community, the Attic Sale is a “full-circle moment for the community,” Wynne said.

• Donations may be taken to the Callaway Conference Center from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday and 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. To donate to next year’s sale or make arrangements for pickup, email info@jsloflagrange.com.
