HOGANSVILLE – The Callaway Cavaliers, who have reached the halfway point of the regular season with a perfect record, remain fourth in this week’s Class AA Associated Press poll.

Callaway overwhelmed Harris County 48-21 last week to improve to 5-0, and it is off this week before beginning its Region 5-AA schedule on Oct. 7 at Lamar County.

Callaway, which has been ranked as high as third this season, has been fourth the past few weeks.

Fitzgerald is ranked first and received 13 of the 18 first-place votes, and Benedictine got the other five first-place votes and is second.

Jefferson, Callaway and Brooks County round out the top 10.

One of Callaway’s rivals in Region 5-AA, Heard County, is ranked ninth this week and it moved up a spot after a big home win over Temple.

Lamar County (3-2) and Temple (4-1), who are also in Region 5-AA, had been receiving votes before they both lost week.

Spencer (4-2) has also received votes this season.

In Class AAAA, defending state champion Cartersville received all 18 first-place votes and sits atop the rankings.

Sandy Creek, which along with Cartersville is in Region 5-AAAA with LaGrange and Troup, moved up a spot from fifth to fourth this week.

Troup will visit Sandy Creek on Friday for a region game.

In the state’s highest classification, Class AAAAAAA, Mill Creek is ranked first, Houston County is first in Class AAAAAA, and Stockbridge is just ahead of Buford at the top of the Class AAAAA poll.

Greater Atlanta Christian is the top-ranked team in Class AAA, and Eagle’s Landing is a unanimous number one selection in Class A.
