HOGANSVILLE – The Callaway Cavaliers will begin their quest for a second straight region championship this week.

Callaway (5-0) will begin its Region 5-AA schedule with a road game against Lamar County on Friday.

Callaway has been a dominant team so far, winning each of its five games by at least 14 points, but head coach Pete Wiggins is expecting it to be a dogfight over the course of the next five weeks.

After the Lamar County game, Callaway will return home to face a strong Heard County squad, and it closes the regular season against Temple, Spencer and Jordan.

“It’ll be a difficult schedule each Friday night,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said.

If the Cavaliers continue to play like they have been, though, they could be up to the challenge.

Callaway opened its season with a 37-6 victory over LaGrange, and it followed that up with wins over Handley (42-28), Columbus (28-7), Upson-Lee (34-7) and Harris County (48-21).

“I’m very proud of our kids for staying level, for working each week one game at a time,” Wiggins said. “That’s what we’ve always tried to do, and prepare for the opponent that Friday night. That’s who we focus on. We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves.”

Callaway will have its hands full in this region, beginning with Friday’s road test against Lamar County.

“Lamar County will be a tough opponent,” Wiggins said. “We just have to keep preparing, and stay level, and stay focused. It’ll be a tough game.”

The following week, Callaway will host Heard County on a Thursday night, and that’s an intriguing matchup.

Heard County is 5-1, and it began its region schedule on Sept. 23 with a 41-0 win over a Temple team that was unbeaten at the time.

Heard County’s only loss came on the road to a Darlington team that is ranked in Class A.

Callaway then plays Temple (5-1) and Spencer (4-2) who both have winning records, and it closes the regular season against a winless Jordan (0-6) team.
