WEST POINT — Getting to city hall in West Point may be a challenge over the next few weeks.

During Thursday morning’s mayor and council work session, Streets and Sanitation Director Thomas Scott gave an update on the streetscape construction now being done on Ninth Street and at the parking lots near city hall.

Scott said all the demolition work has been done on Ninth Street and they have started pouring curbs. Parking lot demolition is underway and should be finished this week, he said.

The contractor will be doing a lot of the parking lot work on weekends, Scott said, to reduce inconvenience to residents who use the parking lots.

City Manager Ed Moon cautioned there could be some inconveniences for city residents coming to city hall over the next few weeks.

Moon also reported that the trimming work on downtown trees has been completed and businesses seem pleased that their buildings and signs are now more visible to the public.

He also reported that work continues on the parking area for the Virginia Cook Day Care Center building. The site has been grassed, and the city is ready to close on one piece of property that will be used for parking.

“We’re still working on the other one,” he said.

Two public hearings were held prior to the work session on rezoning requests. No comments were made on proposals to rezone 208 Sunset Drive from Commercial to R1-A and 1301 Third Avenue from R-1 to R-2.

The mayor and council also reviewed appointments to city boards that will be confirmed at Monday’s regular meeting and a contract for the municipal court judge. Moon suggested a similar contract be drawn up for the city solicitor, and the council agreed to the suggestion.

Councilmember Sandra Thornton reported that 72 children were signed up for Christmas presents by the Salvation Army, and encouraged support for a cancer awareness walk that will be held Oct. 30 in West Point.

Mayor Steve Tramell reminded everyone of the Point University homecoming parade to be held in West Point Saturday, Oct. 15.
