Due to a number of generous gifts in memory of Flora C. Brown and her estate settlement, Habitat for Humanity, Troup County Inc. recently announced the construction of a new home, in addition to the projects announced in August.

Brown is the mother of Steve Brown, the executive director of the local Habitat.

“Mom often told anyone who would listen that she was proud of our work here with Habitat,” Brown said. “My sister, Georgia, and I feel it is totally appropriate that we construct a home in her memory.”

The application process has been extended until noon Nov. 4 for Troup County residents. Homes are scheduled to be constructed for up to four deserving partner families in LaGrange, Hogansville and Troup County, Georgia. Habitat is currently building a home in West Point.

“Our first Troup County house sponsorship is funded by generous donations from Dallas-Dodd Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church, P&G/Duracell and Troup County,” stated a spokesperson in a press release. “These donations have been matched 100 percent by Habitat for Humanity, Troup County Inc. and PNC Bank, our newest financial partner.”

Habitat has also received additional financial support from Rosemont, Callaway and Franklin Road Baptist churches, the Tharpe Family Foundation, and “a most generous anonymous donor,” the spokesperson stated.

These donations will also be matched by Habitat and PNC Bank funds, for a second project.

Habitat is also working closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the cities of Hogansville, LaGrange and West Point.

Key requirements for successful partner families are:

1) Need. Overcrowded, unsafe, unhealthy or dangerous living conditions and/or too large a percentage of income utilized for rent.

2) Willingness to partner. Three-hundred hours of volunteer service — sweat equity — must be completed.

3) Ability to pay. Income, work history and references are required. In addition, criminal background and credit scores will be reviewed.

Habitat for Humanity makes home ownership affordable by offering successful partner families a 0-percent interest mortgage.

Application packages are available at the local Habitat ReStore, 333 Main St., LaGrange, during regular business hours 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
