LAGRANGE – He’s Kansas-bound.

Case Dougherty, a senior at LaGrange Academy, has signed a letter of intent to play golf at Sterling College in Kansas.

Dougherty, who attended Callaway High for three years before transferring to LaGrange Academy, made a trip to Kansas to take a tour of the campus, and he liked what he saw.

“I got an email from a coach,” Dougherty said. “I just kind of looked into it and said I was going to do a visit. I went out there and ended up liking it.”

With friends and family looking on, Dougherty made it official on Tuesday when he signed his letter of intent.

His mother Carmen Burrows, who also coached him while he was at Callaway, was beside him as he signed the documents.

Kansas is a long way from LaGrange, but Dougherty isn’t a bit apprehensive about taking the leap and traveling to the Midwest to attend the four-year school.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Dougherty said. “It’s going to be a great experience. The college I’m going to, they’re one of the better ones in the conference. I’ll have a chance to go to the national tournament.”

Dougherty began playing golf in the eighth grade, and while he clearly has an acumen for the sport, he said it’s not his primary sport.

“I probably play basketball more than golf,” said Dougherty, whose younger brother Ian is a sophomore at Callaway and is a member of the cross-country and golf teams. “Golf kind of came naturally.”

Dougherty will be a member of the LaGrange Academy basketball team this season, and he’ll re-unite with former Callaway High classmate Lincoln Anderson, a senior standout for the Warriors.

“Lincoln and I are good friends,” Dougherty said.
