Schools look at ‘phasing out’ Whitesville Road

LaGRANGE – The Troup County School Board has approved a resolution to phase out the use of Whitesville Road Elementary School.

The board determined that it would be more expensive to renovate the building to keep it up to standards then to build a new school.

“It’s a process that people will be a part of and informed about along the way,” said Whitesville Road Elementary School Principal Debra Brock.

A new school should be built at a different site, according to the board. The school board would still own the land where the school is, and after the phase out, the board will need to decide what to do with WRES and its surrounding land.

Assistant Superintendent John Radcliffe brought up the idea of having soccer fields or a skate park for public use at the location, and the board plans to consider those possibilities, especially since the school is only a few miles away from the proposed site of the Great Wolf Lodge.

The next Troup County School Board meeting is scheduled for Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

The Troup County School Board plans to phase out Whitesville Road Elementary School due to the high cost of repairing the current building, officials say.
