LaGRANGE- Christmas is the season for giving and nothing exemplifies that more than helping and making the holidays a joyful experience for others.

The Georgia State Patrol and Home Depot collaborated together to donate a Christmas tree this holiday season to a family in need. The Georgia State Patrol reached out to the Troup County office of the Division of Family and Children’s Services in search of a less fortunate family that might need a tree.

DFCS was able to match them with Massie Hanns and her three small grandchildren, who are living at Lucy Morgan Homes at the moment.

“Were grateful to have resources like the Georgia State Patrol and DFCS to partner with and have the chance to give back to the community,” said Home Depot Supervisor Michael Wade.

“We’re grateful and pleased to find a needy family and give a tree to them,” said GSP Sergeant 1st Class Maurice Raines.

On Thursday morning, Raines, along with employees from Home Depot and members of the LaGrange Housing Authority, made their way over to Hanns’ home to surprise her with a brand new tree, bulbs and lights to hang on the tree. The group in attendance then helped put together the tree and set the lights on it.

Hanns couldn’t have been happier.

“I feel real warm inside,” said Hanns. “I really can’t express how good it feels to have something that I wanted to do but wasn’t able to do. I have to say that I really didn’t see it coming. It’s like a dream come true, especially here with my grandkids.”

This Christmas is special for Hanns because this will be her first Christmas spent with her three grandchildren.

“I know they will remember this and appreciate this,” said Hanns. “It’s the first Christmas I get a chance to spend with them and it’s just wonderful to share this time with them.”
