Troup wins area championship

They’re the champs.

The Troup Tigers went 2-0 on Tuesday to take the top spot in the Area 5-AAAA duals at Central-Carroll.

Troup, along with second-place finisher LaGrange, will compete in the state wrestling duals beginning on Thursday in Macon.

Troup beat Cartersville to advance to the championship round and secure a spot in the state duals, while LaGrange beat Central-Carroll to make it to the finals.

In the championship match, LaGrange beat 52-24 to secure the area title.

BASKETBALL: The Callaway Lady Cavaliers are on the board.

After dropping their first eight games, the Lady Cavaliers broke through for a 53-36 over Jordan on Tuesday.

Callaway (1-8) evened its Region 5-AA record at 1-1.

Junior post player Chyna Cameron led the way for Callaway with 14 points, and Haley Holliday added 12 points.

Eleven different Callaway players scored.

The Lady Cavaliers started quickly, surging to a 15-7 lead after the first quarter, and they were ahead 34-12 at the half.

In Tuesday’s boys’ game, the Cavaliers fell to 0-2 in the region with a 78-71 loss.

Callaway’s teams will host Spencer on Friday.

Also on Tuesday, LaGrange Academy’s teams swept past visiting St. George.

In the girls’ game, LaGrange Academy rolled to a 44-27 win, with Laney Anderson and Alexus Scott leading the way with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

In the boys’ game, Lincoln Anderson scored 26 points and Brandon Haynes had 14 points as LaGrange Academy won 58-16.
