LaGRANGE – The energy of the group gathered near the concession stand at the George Harris Baseball Complex was contagious as they warmed up their legs and their hearts for a jog around the fields with the “Cupid Shuffle.”

The local chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Alumni hosted a special race in honor of Heart Disease Awareness month on Sunday that featured a DJ, healthy snacks, and plenty of balloons. The community event welcomed not just alumni, but their families and anyone who wanted to join in on the fun.

“One of our program thrusts is physical and mental health, so this (ISweat Red race) is one of our programs to fall under that umbrella of trying to stay physically (fit),” said Yashica Brooks, a sorority alumni who helped organize the event. “… One of our sorority colors is red, so that is where the theme came from.”

The sorority members who took part in the event and its organization were not just local graduates, many of the women had gone to school in other cities before coming back to the Troup and Coweta county area to live and work. While the event was sponsored by sorority alumni, the race – like all its other events – was open to the public.

“This is to bring more awareness to heart disease and stroke and to get the community started with exercise and prevention methods,” said Kay Fannin. “It is a completely free event to the community, so we are just encouraging everyone to be active.”

The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Alumni plan to host an event focusing on childhood obesity in April.  To learn more about the group’s upcoming events visit them on Facebook at the LaGrange Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
