LAGRANGE – LaGrange High’s soccer teams tuned up for the start of region play by getting road wins over Central-Phenix City on Monday.

LaGrange’s teams will open their Region 5-AAAA schedules at home against Central-Carroll today, with the girls’ game starting at 5 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow.

On Monday, LaGrange’s girls’ team blanked Central-Phenix City 5-0.

It was a breakthrough night for a pair of Lady Grangers who notched their first-ever varsity goals.

Abby Mazzolini had two goals, and Izzy Pippin had one.

Maggie Asbell also scored for LaGrange, and a Central-Phenix player accidentally kicked the ball into her own net for another goal.

Things were a bit tighter in the boys’ game, with LaGrange edging Central-Phenix City 2-1, and Grayson Bartley scored both of the goals.

LaGrange’s teams will take the first step toward what they hope will be a spot in the state tournament today.

To make that a reality, both teams will need to finish among the top four teams in the region.

The Lady Grangers will bring a 4-3 record into today’s game, while the Grangers are 4-1.

Also today, Troup’s soccer teams will begin their Region 5-AAAA schedules with road games against Cartersville.

Callaway begins Region 5-AA play at home against Lamar County on Friday.
