COLUMBUS – The Callaway Cavaliers (2-4) opened their Region 5-AA soccer schedule with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Jordan on Wednesday.

Callaway trailed 2-0 after giving up two goals in the first two 10 minutes, but it rallied for the win in a game that was cut short because of lightning.

“I am very happy to see our resiliency tonight,” LaGrange Academy coach Mike Petite said. “The fact that we were able to come back from a 2-0 early deficit was very big for us. We kept to our game plan and played our game despite being behind. The first that we were able to come back, take the lead, and control the flow of the game shows us that we are growing as a team. We have to continue to improve every day if we expect to continue to compete in region play.”

Jordan struck for a goal two minutes into the game, and it added another goal six minutes later to go up 2-0.

Callaway began its comeback when Wesley Brooks took a pass from Jonathan Castillo and scored, cutting Jordan’s lead to 2-1.

Midway through the first half, Noah Stephens took a free kick from 50 yards out, and it bounced over the goal keeper’s head for another goal, and the game was tied.

With three minutes remaining in the first half, Callaway took the lead.

Stephens passed the ball to Ian Bryan, who scored to give the Cavaliers their first lead of the game.

In the second half, Callaway’s defense made the one-goal lead stand up.

Jordan had one shot in the second half, which Callaway goal keeper Hugo Lopez stopped.

With 17 minutes remaining, the game was called because of lightning, and Callaway had the win.

In the girls’ game, Callaway beat Jordan 6-0.

Kelly Carlisle and Ashley Bowden each had two goals for Callaway, and Addie Pruett and Zoe Howard had one goal apiece.

Callaway’s teams will be at home today against Lamar County for their second region game.
