HOGANSVILLE – The hope is to be back at the break-even point by the time region play begins.

The Callaway Cavaliers have had an up-and-down season, and they fell to 5-7 with Monday’s 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Troup Tigers.

Callaway had evened its record with a win over Westminster on Saturday, but it dropped its next two games to fall below .500.

Callaway will play two more games, including today’s game at Handley (Ala.), before opening Region 5-AA play next week against Temple.

Even though the Cavaliers have a losing record, head coach Dusty Hubbard said “we’ve got a chance to be pretty good.”

Callaway showed how dangerous a team it can be when it beat defending Class AA state-champion Westminster 14-8 on Saturday before losing the second game of the doubleheader 9-4.

Then on Monday, junior pitcher Chandler Lott delivered a brilliant performance, throwing 8 2/3 shutout innings in the 2-1 loss.

It was a breakthrough performance for Lott, who is in his first season at Callaway.

On Saturday, it was senior pitcher Josh Hanson throwing a gem against Westminster, so Callaway will head into region play with two reliable starters with the ability to deliver lock-down performances.

After today’s game, Callaway will visit Westminster on Monday before hosting Temple on Tuesday in its region opener.

“I think we can maybe reel some wins off, and get our confidence under us,” Hubbard said.
