Mary Alice Fanning

Mary Alice Fanning passed away Tuesday.

She was born on April 15, 1926 in LaGrange, Georgia to the late Jim Lane and Mattie Carrie Dunson Fanning .

She attended Shady Grove Community School and was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. She later united with the Faith Temple Church of Deliverance where she served faithfully on the Mother Board and the Senior Choir until her health declined.

Mary Alice was an accomplished musician and served as the pianist for many years for the following churches:  Thankful, Rising Grove, Macedonia, Antioch, Pleasant Grove, and Welcome Baptist Church.

She served as a chef throughout the years at the Moose Club, Plantation Restaurant, Shades Restaurant, LaGrange College, Collegiate Grill and the Greyhound Bus Station. She also assisted the community in elderly care.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four children, Larry D. Fanning, Patricia Fanning Jones, Arthur James Hurston, and Willie H. Hairston; two brothers, John W. Fanning and Charlie C. Fanning.

Survivors include her children, John (Marie) Hurston, LaGrange, GA; Mary (Kenneth) Davie, Newnan, GA; and Gary (Julia) Fanning, Lanett, AL; a brother, Robert Fanning; 19 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren; two special friends, Lula Delaney and Elizabeth White; a god daughter, Leona Webb; a devoted and dedicated caregiver, Melissa Wilson; a loving friend, neighbor, and caregiver, Regina Whitfield Thomas. In addition, she also leaves to cherish her memories residents from the Dunson Street Retirement Home where she resided as well as other relatives and friends.

The Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday at 3:00 PM at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Pastor Gary L. Fanning will officiate. Burial will follow at Meadoway Gardens Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of her son, John (Marie) Hurston at 307 Valley Court and will receive friends in the Chapel of Lakes-Dunson-Robertson Funeral Home on Friday from 7-8.
