LAGRANGE – It’s a title showdown.

The LaGrange Grangers and Cartersville Purple Hurricanes will face off at Callaway Stadium tonight, with region supremacy on the line.

The winner will be the Region 5-AAAA soccer champion, while the loser will finish second.

The Grangers have used a stingy defense and some timely scoring to amass a 5-0 region record.

LaGrange opened its region schedule with back-to-back 1-0 wins over Central-Carroll and Sandy Creek.

LaGrange didn’t score a goal in regulation or overtime against Cedartown, but it won on penalty kicks to improve to 3-0 in the region.

That win set up a first-place showdown with Troup, and LaGrange prevailed 2-0 on goals by Alex Bowie and Winston Herrera.

LaGrange followed that up with a 3-1 win over Chapel Hill, with Harrison Hunnicutt scoring all three goals.

Chapel Hill scored late in the game, and that’s the only goal LaGrange has given up in region play.

“The kids are playing awesome,” LaGrange coach Keita Placide said after the win over Troup. “The intensity is there. The belief is there. That’s the number one thing. I’m happy. I can truly say I’m happy with what I’m seeing on the field.”

Cartersville has a 4-0 region record, and it has outscored those four teams 12-5.

Also today, the LaGrange Lady Grangers will look to finish with a perfect region record with a win over Cartersville.

LaGrange has already wrapped up the region championship thanks to Friday’s 3-2 overtime win over Chapel Hill.

In the second overtime period, Maggie Asbell scored on a free kick from 40 yards out to give her team the lead.
