HOGANSVILLE – They’re rolling.

The Callaway Lady Cavaliers had a few bumps in the road early in the season, but they made it six wins in seven games with Friday’s 10-1 drubbing of visiting Spencer.

Callaway completed its Region 5-AA soccer schedule with a 6-2 record, and it will be at home for the first round of the state tournament after finishing in second place.

Although Friday’s outcome had no bearing on where the Lady Cavaliers were going to finish in the region, they approached it like it was the most important game of the season.

“We come out here to have fun, but we come out here to play good, and we did tonight,” Callaway’s Breanna Vaught said.

Callaway’s Kelly Carlisle, who had five goals, said “we do that with every game. We approach every game like it’s a big game.”

Callaway’s only two region losses came to Lamar County, which won the region championship.

Outside of the two setbacks to Lamar County, Callaway hasn’t lost to anyone else since February.

“I think we’re playing great as a team this year,” Carlisle said.

In addition to Carlisle’s five goals, Acia Stephens had a pair of goals for Callaway, and Zoe Howard, Kyla Montgomery and Chloe McGuffin each had one goal.

“We’ve progressed a lot since the first few games,” Vaught said. “If we could go back and play the teams we played at the beginning of the season the way we’re playing now, we’d do a lot better.”

In their first five games, the Lady Cavaliers had four losses and a tie, but outside of the hiccups against Lamar County, they’ve been rolling.

“We had three losses in a row,” Callaway coach Shawna Yawn said. “But since then, the team has found that niche and they’ve been successful. We’re getting better with each game. With each game you can see the team growing, and the potential’s there.”

Callaway is off until April 10 when it plays Kendrick, and it has four regular-season games remaining until the state playoffs begin.
