GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The season ended for Austin Garrett and his teammates on the Wallace-Dothan Community College baseball team on Monday.

Facing Crowder College (Mo.) in an elimination game, Wallace-Dothan was beaten 10-7 in the Junior College World Series.

Garrett did his part.

The sophomore, who was a standout player during his time at Callaway High, had seven hits during Wallace-Dothan’s three World Series games, and three of those hits came on Monday.

It wasn’t enough, though.

Crowder banged out 15 hits and scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Garett, hitting in the number two spot in the order, had three hits, including two doubles, and he scored a run.

Garrett doubled and scored a run during a four-run third inning as Wallace-Dothan took a 5-4 lead.

Wallace-Dothan was still up 7-6 when Crowder broke through in the eighth inning.

Garrett had two hits during a 13-5 loss to Cowley County, and he had two more hits in an 11-3 victory over Southern Nevada.

Garrett had a big sophomore season, finishing with a .369 batting average, and he had home run, 22 RBIs, and 38 runs scored.

Garrett finished the season on an eight-game hitting streak, and in his final 14 games, he had two or more hits 10 times.

Also on Monday, Chipola (Fla.) fell to 1-1 in the World Series with a 13-8 loss to San Jacinto (Tex.).

Kevin Craft, a sophomore and a teammate of Wallace’s at Callaway, is a pitcher for Chipola, and he threw a scoreless inning during the loss to San Jacinto.

Chipola, the number one seed, needs a win today to keep its tournament hopes alive.
