Elementary school broken into

Unity Elementary School, located at 525 Park Avenue, was broken into sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning, according to a LaGrange Police Department report.

An employee of the school arrived at the school Monday morning after 7 a.m. and found toilet paper rolls thrown all around, paper towels, straws, trophies and broken glass, according to the report.

The suspects were able to get into the school through a broken window in the teacher’s lounge. There also appeared to be an attempt to gain entry through a door window toward the back of a hallway in the school.

The broken windows were estimated to be around $100 in value. The LaGrange Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident.

Man arrested for allegedly

shoplifting twice in a 11 days

A man was arrested Saturday for allegedly shoplifting at Wal-Mart on New Franklin Road, but it may not have been the first time it’s happened.

The man was arrested Saturday at 3:35 p.m. for allegedly stealing $349.59 worth of items. According to the police report, he picked up several items, went to another location in the store and placed those items in Wal-Mart shopping bags he removed from his pocket. The report said he then tried to leave the store.

He was met by Wal-Mart security and soon the police department, according to the report.

He was placed under arrest and taken to the Troup County Jail to be booked.

According to a second police report from Saturday, the man was also arrested Saturday for a separate incident that occurred on May 31. On that day, he allegedly did the same thing — placing unpaid items into shopping bags — and then walked out of the store. The value of the stolen items that day was $122.42.

Man arrested for driving without a license

A man was arrested Sunday by officers with the LaGrange Police Department for driving without a driver’s license.

The man said he was driving because he had just left a wedding and his girlfriend needed to change her shoes. The man had his Alabama driver’s license suspended for a DUI in January 2014 and for driving while suspended in October 2011.

The man, 33, was arrested at 12:42 a.m. and taken to the Troup County Jail.

Man arrested for trying to return diapers he hadn’t purchased

A 63-year-old man was arrested Saturday for allegedly returning a box of diapers he hadn’t purchased to Wal-Mart.

According to the police report, the man walked to the diaper section and pulled a box off the shelf.

He sat down and appeared to be comparing the item’s SKU numbers to a receipt he had in his hand.

After looking at the receipt, he walked to the front of the store and returned the diapers, receiving a $7.46 refund. The incident was caught on tape, according to the police report.

LaGrange Police responded around 7:44 p.m. in reference to a shoplifting call, but the man had already left the store. Police eventually made contact with the suspect on Banks Street.
