HOGANSVILLE – For the eighth consecutive summer, Callaway High head coach Pete Wiggins and his assistant coaches will take a few hours to teach the sport to a group of players younger than they’re accustomed to.

The Pete Wiggins Football Camp will be held on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until noon at the Callaway High practice field.

The camp is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 14, and the cost is $10.

Wiggins, who became Callaway’s head coach before the 2005 season, said the camp is always a highlight for he and the other coaches, as well as the players who help out as instructors.

“We have fun with it,” Wiggins said following last year’s camp. “We try to teach the kids technique and skills, but it’s about relationships, and reaching out to the youth, and seeing our older guys communicate with them, and just having a good time. That’s what it’s about. It’s a great day for all of us.”

Wiggins always makes it a point to involve his players in the camp.“I remember when I was a young guy in elementary school, and I remember what I thought of the older football players, the high-school guys, and you really look up to those guys,” Wiggins said. “They want to be like them. It’s really special to see them come out here and interact in a positive way.”

Wiggins is preparing for his 13th season as Callaway’s head coach, and the program has enjoyed tremendous success under his leadership.

Wiggins has an overall record of 114-40, and the Cavaliers went 13-1 a year ago and reached the semifinals of the state playoffs.

Callaway has made it to the state playoffs for 11 consecutive seasons, and it has been in the final four in two of the past four years.

A handful of other coaches have been with Wiggins since 2005, including offensive coordinator Matt Napier and defensive coordinator Dusty Hubbard.

As always, Napier, Hubbard and Wiggins will be out there on Tuesday leading the young players through the drills.

“It’s a lot of fun for the kids participating, but for the coaches, too,” Wiggins said. “We enjoy it.”
