Tomorrow is the beginning of August and with it comes school, athletics and all of the added extracurricular activities that go on during the fall.

Local students still have a couple of days before they get back into the classroom, and we’re sure they are doing their best to enjoy every second remaining in their summer break.

Meanwhile, parents are trying to get ready.

Everyone needs to be ready on the roadways.

Over the last few months, there hasn’t been school bus traffic in the mornings or afternoons and school isn’t in session when you drive through a school zone.

That’ll change in the next few weeks, so we’ll all need to adjust. Make sure you don’t speed through school zones and remember to stop for school buses.

The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration recommends these tips:

When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, watch out for students who aren’t paying attention near the roadways.

Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in neighborhood.

In bus stops, expect children to congregate and be playing.

Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic.

There are a lot of things parents have to worry about when trying to get their children ready for the school day. Do your part to help make things a little easier on them — slow down in school zones and near bus stops this school year.
