LAGRANGE – After an 11-run outburst in their season opener, the Callaway Lady Cavaliers were hoping the bats would stay hot for Saturday’s games in the Hope for a Day event at LaGrange High.

Instead, Callaway’s hitters were handcuffed by the pitchers from LaGrange and Troup.

The Lady Cavaliers (1-2) managed just one run in the two games combined, and they lost 7-0 to LaGrange before finishing the day with a 7-1 setback to Troup.

“We did some things good. You can’t say it was a total loss,” Callaway head coach Ashley Summerlin said. “We didn’t play horrible defense. We played good enough defense. If you want to say what it is, we just didn’t hit the ball.”

In its first game, Callaway was nearly no-hit by LaGrange pitcher Camden Smith.

The Lady Cavaliers’ only hit in the game came when Oeisha Jenkins reached on a two-out double in the seventh inning.

Callaway had more offensive success in the Troup game with seven hits, but it only managed a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Lexi Furgerson.

That rally began with back-to-back singles by Jenkins and Lydia Bartlett, and they both moved up on a bunt by Kourtney Grier before Furgerson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Leijorey Sanders had three hits from the leadoff position, Jasmine Dukes had two hits, and Jenkins and Bartlett each had a hit.

“We just didn’t do anything (offensively),” Summerlin said. “But we’ll get back to work, and we’ll see how it goes.”

Callaway will visit Central-Carroll on Tuesday.
