HOGANSVILLE – A strong Bowdon softball team jumped out to the early lead on Tuesday and went on to capture an 8-0 victory over Callaway.

“We ran into a buzzsaw,” Callaway coach Ashley Summerlin said. “They hit the ball really well. We probably played our worst defensive game we have all year. But it happens that way. You just have to flush it and move on, and that’s what I told them tonight. You just have to be ready every day. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it don’t.”

Bowdon scored three runs in the top of the first inning to surge ahead, and Callaway threatened to cut into that deficit in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Cavaliers put two runners on, but they were both left stranded.

“That first inning, it’s 3-0, and if we get a two-out hit, we’re going to score two runs and it’s a new ballgame and you feel like you’re back in the game,” Summerlin said.

Instead, Bowdon kept its 3-0 lead.

“I’m still proud of them,” Summerlin said. “I don’t think they gave up in the dugout. I thought they were in it. We just didn’t do enough offensively to get back in the game.”

Callaway (5-4) will look to get back on the winning track when it visits Landmark Christian on Thursday.

“We weren’t on point today, and when you play good teams you have to be,” Summerlin said. “If we learn from it and come back and do the things we’ll do, we’ll recover. That’s just kind of the nature of the beast.”
