Donald Woodrow Taylor passed away on Aug. 23, 2017, surrounded by family at his home in Pine Mountain, Georgia. He was born in 1936 in Alexander City, Alabama and is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Margot (Didi); son Patrick (Margaret) and their children, Daniel, Margot, Michael, Andrew and Katherine; daughter Carla Maley (Tom) their children Jack, Kathleen and Courtney; brother Boyd (Sherry), sister Bonnie Smith (Charles) and brother Dwight (Pat).

Don was a parishioner at Christ the King Catholic Church serving as an usher and on the Parish Council and received the Bishop Gartland Service Award for his work with the church.

At LaGrange High School he was the starting fullback on the 1955 state champion football team and proudly attended Georgia Military College.

He joined Callaway Gardens in 1962 where he worked for over 20 years and remained the Gardens’ greatest fan throughout his life. Don went on to own and operate the Davis Inn, also in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

The Boy Scouts of America were an important part of his life from when he joined as a youth to his long-time service in a variety of leadership positions. As recognition for his leadership with the Scouts he was awarded the Silver Beaver.

He was a on the board of directors of First People’s Bank, member and president of the Pine Mountain Chamber of Commerce and president of the Pine Mountain Tourist Association.  Throughout his life as promoter of the beauty of Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain and his community at large, he never passed a piece of trash that he failed to pick up.

Most important to Don were the many many friends he made throughout his life. Whether he met them in grade school, high school, college, work, as a volunteer or care provider at the end of his life, everyone knew they were special to him.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday Aug. 27 at Cox Funeral Home in Hamilton, Georgia followed by a rosary at 6:15 p.m. The Reverend Father John R. Madden will officiate the Requiem Mass at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 28 at Christ the King in Pine Mountain, Georgia. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to Christ the King Catholic Church or Hospice of West Georgia.
