They’re number two.

The Callaway Cavaliers have risen to the second spot in Class AA in this week’s Associated Press poll, which is voted on by sports writers across the state.

Benedictine, which won the Class AA state championship a year ago, received all 18 of the first-place votes.

Callaway moved up a spot from third to second, while Fitzgerald fell to third.

Fitzgerald lost to Benedictine in last year’s state-championship game.

Jefferson County is ranked sixth, and Rabun County, Thomasville, Heard County and Brooks County round out the top 10.

Heard County (1-1) moved into the top 10 after Saturday’s hard-fought 17-14 loss to Saraland (Fla.).

In Class AAAA, Cartersville remains a unanimous number one after a dramatic 52-45 victory over Bartram Trail (Fla.).

Cartersville plays in Region 5-AAAA along with LaGrange and Troup.

Grayson is ranked first in Class AAAAAAA, Tucker is tops in Class AAAAAA, Rome leads the way in Class AAAAA, Greater Atlanta Christian is the top team in Class AAA, and Eagle’s Landing Christian is first in Class A.
