Carolyn Hilyer Knight

Mrs. Carolyn Hilyer Knight, age 96 of Carrollton, Georgia died Monday, Sept. 4, 2017.

Mrs. Knight was born in Coweta County, Georgia on July 1, 1921, the daughter of the late Eldridge V. Hilyer and Sallie Sue Johnson Hilyer.  She attended elementary school in Hogansville, Georgia.  After she and her parents moved to LaGrange, Georgia, Mrs. Knight attended LaGrange High School graduating with honors in 1938.  She enrolled at Georgia State College for Women receiving an A.B. degree in Social Studies and Spanish and a B.E. degree in education.  Mrs. Knight taught for two years in Troup County before coming to Carrollton where she taught social studies and Spanish at Carrollton High School.

Mrs. Knight was a member of the First United Methodist Church.  She served as president of the Women of the Church and was given a Life Membership in the Society.  She served on the Parsonage Committee and organized the Altar Guild which began the Chrismon Tree.

Mrs. Knight was a charter member of the Pilot Club of Carrollton and a member of the Lit Mu Club serving as president three times.

In July of 1951, Carolyn Hilyer married Lamar Knight and they made their home in Carrollton.  Mrs. Knight was a devoted Georgia Bulldog football fan and a season ticket holder for many years.  She enjoyed cooking, playing bridge, and traveling both in the States and abroad.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Emily and Bob Medlin of Merritt Island, Florida and several nieces and nephews.   Her husband, Judge Lamar Knight, preceded her in death.

It was the desire of Mrs. Knight that no visitation or service be held.  Mrs. Knight will be cremated and her remains returned to the Hilyer plot at Shadow Lawn in LaGrange for a family remembrance.

The family would like to give special thanks to Embrace Hospice, Carolyn Holden, Margaret Johnson and Autumn Square Assisted Living staff for the care they gave to Mrs. Knight.
