The Troup County School System said it will monitor Hurricane Irma throughout the weekend as it tries to make a final decision on any potential school closures for early next week.

As of Friday afternoon, Hurricane Irma was projected to hit Florida this weekend before making its way up into the state of Georgia. The storm’s path is projected to take it toward Atlanta and LaGrange is likely to receive several inches of rain and heavy winds.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City said Troup County could receive as much as 4-5 inches of rain and gusts of wind up to 40-50 mph.

“Troup County School System (TCSS) is carefully monitoring the potential weather impact from Hurricane Irma with local emergency operation divisions. We are alert to possible changing weather conditions over the weekend and are working with our state and local emergency management systems,” read a press release from the Troup County School System. “As more information becomes available, we will make a decision about school closures to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and their families. Our course of action through the weekend is dependent on the track of the storm.”

If there are school closures, the school system will notify the community through a One Call phone call, update the district and school websites and update the Troup County School System Facebook social media channel.
