HOGANSVILLE – The Callaway Cavaliers remained second in this week’s Class AA Associated Press poll, and they’re sandwiched between two teams they’re very familiar with.

A year ago, Callaway beat Screven County in the Class AA quarterfinals before falling to Benedictine in the semifinals.

All three of those teams are off to strong starts this season, and they’re the top three teams in the Class AA poll, which is voted on by sports writers across the state.

Benedictine, which won the state title last year, with an unbeaten record, is ranked first, and it received all 14 of the first-place votes.

Callaway is second, and Screven County, Hapeville Charter and Rabun County round out the top five.

Heard County, which will host Callaway on Oct. 13 in a critical region showdown, is ninth in this week’s Class AA poll.

In Class AAAA, Cartersville continues to lead the way, Sandy Creek is fourth, and Cedartown is 10th.

Cartersville, Sandy Creek and Cedartown are members of Region 5-AAAA along with LaGrange and Troup.

Grayson is ranked first in Class AAAAAAA, Lee County owns the top spot in Class AAAAAA, Rome is first in Class AAAAA, Cedar Grove is tops in Class AAA, and Eagle’s Landing is first in Class A.
