Showing kids the joy of outdoors

There’s something relaxing about a day on the lake, especially if the fish are biting. Anyone from Troup County knows that it’s hard to beat an afternoon at West Point Lake with no cell phone to answer and only the sounds of nature in the distance.

In today’s fast-paced world, these are moments none of us seem to get enough of. Many of us are always on the phone or in front of the computer and rarely get a chance to experience the outdoors.

Our children are also growing up in that same world, full of technology and in front of the television screen. It’s more important than ever to show our youth the joys of being outside.

The Troup County Sportsmen’s Club did its part Saturday, holding its annual Kiddie Fishing Rodeo. The event has been held for the last 50 years and is focused around showing children how to fish.

It gets parents and their children together and it gets children outside and on the water.

It may not seem like much, but for some of the children, Saturday could’ve been the first time they’d ever had a fishing pole in their hands.

Some of the children even left with prizes, which were given out for the biggest fish and most fish caught.

Thanks to the organizers who put the event on every year. We’re sure they’ve made a difference in the lives of hundreds of children over the years.
