Deshawn Demarcus Williams Maddox was released from the Troup County Jail Friday after investigators determined there was insufficient evidence in the investigation against him, according to Troup County District Attorney Pete Skandalakis.

Maddox was arrested and charged for raping a 15-year-old girl by the Troup County Sheriff’s Office last month. 

Lawyer for the office Edward Case said whenever rape charges are brought forward, the district attorney’s office will investigate and interview everyone involved, including those making the allegations, witnesses and the detectives who worked the case.

“That’s what we did with this case. We met with a person making the outcry, we met with her family, we met with the witnesses that were in the car [when the rape allegedly happened] and we reviewed all the interviews that were done,” Case said. “Based off of that, there was insufficient evidence to prosecute.”

Skandalakis said the rape was reported to have taken place with Maddox and the victim in the backseat of the car and witnesses in the front.

Skandalakis said the office could not find anything prosecutable after noticing the discrepancies from its interview with the victim.

“We were having problems with what she said happened and corroborating with what other witnesses said happened or was happening,” Skandalakis said.

Skandalakis said the victim is not facing charges. He said that as soon as they found the case not prosecutable, Maddox’s warrants were dismissed.
