HOGANSVILLE – It’s been a good week for the Callaway Lady Cavaliers.

After beating Temple on Tuesday for its first region win, Callaway was at home a day later for a softball showdown against LaGrange.

Behind a lock-down pitching performance from Oeisha Jenkins, Callaway (9-12) rolled to a 6-1 victory to win two in a row for the first time since August.

Callaway hosts Landmark Christian today before finishing the regular season on Monday against Brookstone, and then it’ll be off to the Region 5-AA tournament.

Callaway will be the number three seed for the region tournament behind Heard County and Lamar County.

“We’re playing our best ball right now, which is what you want,” Callaway head coach Ashley Summerlin said. “That’s a good team right there. It’s a good win.”

Jenkins, who had a dominant performance in the win over Temple, was on her game against LaGrange as well.

Jenkins threw the seven-inning complete game, and she gave up two hits while striking out four.

“The past two weeks, her changeup is starting to come around, and her changeup is really starting to define her season,” Summerlin said. “Instead of being able to sit on one pitch, she’s able to change speeds. And she throws it for strikes. Nobody swings at that pitch, and she’s able to get ahead. She’s doing a really good job.”

Offensively, Callaway got the job done.

Lydia Bartlett had three hits and an RBI, and Skylar Rice had two hits while driving in a pair of runs.

Leadoff hitter Kelly Carlisle had a hit and was on base three times, and she scored a pair of runs.

Kourtney Grier had two hits and a sacrifice bunt, and Leijorey Sanders, Jasmine Dukes, Kalea Speer and Lindsay Cofield each had a hit.

Jenkins was on base, twice after getting hit by a pitch.

Callaway started quickly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and it added single runs in the second and fourth innings to build a 5-0 lead.

LaGrange scored its lone run in the fifth inning, and Callaway did a fine job of limiting the damage.

LaGrange had the bases loaded when Shaq Sutton drove a ball deep to left field, and the ball was caught at the fence for a sacrifice fly.

After a walk re-loaded the bases, Jenkins got a strikeout to end the inning, and Callaway still had a four-run lead.

Jenkins set LaGrange down in order in the final two innings, and Callaway scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth.

“We’re coming around,” Summerlin said. “They’re starting to buy in. We’re doing some things different a little bit, and it’s starting to take hold. The year didn’t go as planned, but it’s all about how you finish.”
