BARNESVILLE – They’re ready to make some history.

After beating Temple 12-0 on Saturday to finish third in Region 5-AA, the Callaway Lady Cavaliers will be in Atlanta on Wednesday to take on Douglass High in the first round of the state softball tournament.

They’ll play a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 2 p.m., with the if-game set for Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Cavaliers are hoping to win the first state-playoff series in the history of the school’s softball program, and they appear poised to possibly make that a reality.

Callaway has won six of its past eight games, with the only losses during that stretch coming to Heard County and Landmark Christian.

“I think right now, we’re playing about the best we’ve ever played (heading to state),” Callaway head coach Ashley Summerlin said.

In the region tournament, Callaway dropped its opener to Heard County before thumping Temple on Saturday.

Later on Saturday, Lamar County beat Heard County to secure the region championship.

Callaway took care of business against Temple.

“We scored three in the first, four in the second, and just kept adding after that,” Summerlin said.

Callaway pitcher Oeisha Jenkins got the complete-game win, and she also produced at the plate with four RBIs.

The two players at the top of the lineup, Kelly Carlisle and Leijorey Sanders, were on base three times apiece with a combined six runs.

Kourtney Grier drove in two runs, and Lindsay Cofield had a hit.
