Local teams on road for state openers

LAGRANGE – The matchups are set.

The Callaway and Troup softball teams, who finished third in their respective regions, will be on the road on Wednesday for the opening round of the state tournament.

Also this week, the LaGrange Academy softball team will be on the road for the first round of the GISA state playoffs.

Callaway will be in Atlanta to play Douglass, while Troup will head a bit further north to take on Northwest Whitfield.

LaGrange Academy will be in Warrenton on Tuesday to play Briarwood Academy.

The first-round series for all three teams features a best-of-three format with a doubleheader the first day, and the if-game set for the following day.

Troup earned its state spot by beating Cartersville and Cedartown in the Region 5-AAAA tournament.

In a best-of-three series, Troup beat Cartersville before handling Cedartown in a single game on Friday to secure the region’s number three spot.

Northwest Whitfield finished second to Ridgeland in Region 6-AAAA.

Callaway finished third the Region 5-AA tournament after losing to Heard County and beating Temple.

Callaway’s opponent on Wednesday will be Douglass, the runner-up from Region 6-AA.

LaGrange Academy finished third in GISA Region 1-AA, while Briarwood is the second-place team from Region 2-AA.

Also this week, the LaGrange High volleyball team, and the LaGrange Academy boys’ soccer team will be away from home for first-round state matchups.

LaGrange High, the fourth-place team in Area 5-AAAA, will visit Area 7-AAAA champion on Thursday at 5 p.m.

In the GISA state soccer tournament, LaGrange Academy and Oak Mountain will play on Friday at 3 p.m. in Monroe.
