Every week, a startling variety of events take place in Troup County ranging from the big, exciting, circle-the-date-on-your-calendar concerts to the more mundane but ultimately more community altering civic club meetings.

This weekend we went out and covered the Junior Service League’s 43rd annual Attic Sale where donated dressers, Christmas decorations, baskets and too many other items to list here were sold to raise funds to improve the community and give LaGrange a better future.

They, like several of our local civic organizations, have committed to making a difference by helping groups in the area where there never seems to be enough help — funding.

At the same time, when LaGrange’s JSL was holding its big fundraiser, across town the Friends of the Library raised funds to keep library programs going like author talks and the summer reading program.

There is something more than just money that these groups need though. They need support. They need the community to come out and participate like so many people did at the JSL Attic Sale on Saturday. They need volunteers to run the book shop. They need donations of items that are probably laying around your home unused even now as you read this.

It will be almost a year before the JSL holds another attic sale, but in the meantime, it might not be a bad idea to donate that book that was alright the first time you read it, but you will never read again to the Friends of the Library. Or donate that beautiful dress hanging in your closet that is about three sizes off or not really your color to Harmony House or one of the clothing closets in town.

There are too many ways to help to stand idle. There are too many specialized interest groups to remain uninterested.

We can’t tell you what to do, but we do ask that you reflect on just that. Not everyone can give. Not everyone can volunteer. But everyone can do something. What will you do?
