A five-year-old riding a bicycle was hit by a car on Borton Street Sunday night, according to a LaGrange Police Department report. LaGrange Police Cpl. Wesley Engle said the driver was travelling west on the street when the child also started in the same direction. According to Engle, the child saw the car coming and jumped off his bike in time.

“[The driver] saw the child coming, he jumped off the bicycle to the curbside.

She struck the front tire of the bicycle, then the tire struck the child in the leg. He was transferred by AMR to (WellStar) West Georgia Medical Center. He had no visible injuries, but he had complaint of a leg pain,” Engle said.

The child’s mother was given a parental responsibility citation for allowing the child to ride a bicycle without a helmet and for riding a bicycle in the roadway after dark without proper light on the bicycle. She also received a citation for allowing a child to ride a bicycle on a busy roadway in the dark without proper adult supervision, which resulted in a child being struck by a car, Engle said. The child’s uncle was supposed to be watching him at the time of the incident, he said. The driver was not cited because the bicycle was at fault, he said. The LPD now has a speed counter on Borton Street, Engle said.

Tools stolen from truck

More than $3,000 worth of tools were allegedly stolen from a Teaver Plumbing work truck on Youngsmill Road between Friday at 5 p.m. and Monday at 8 a.m.

The business owner told police the items were in unlocked tool boxes on his truck, according to the police report. Items taken include three Milwaukee drills, a Ryobi battery pack, a Milwaukee Sawall and a Ryobi Sawzall.
